John grew up playing a variety of competitive sports, but his favourite activity was riding bikes. John spent a large part of his childhood racing BMX, eventually winning the Canadian national championships as a 17 year old and representing Canada in several UCI world championship events. Suffering a severe head injury while competing in Australia at the age of 17 turned out to be a blessing in disguise for John. It inspired him to go to university to study Human Kinetics with the eventual goal of training other athletes to reach the peaks of athletic performance. It was during his time at university that John fell in love with his second passion, powerlifting. He went on to spend the next decade of his life learning everything possible to make himself and others bigger, stronger and faster through the barbell. He had amazing mentors who were professors, strength and conditioning coaches and fellow powerlifters who helped shape his philosophy into what it is today.
